Content and Theme of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Rivaled...

Content and theme of Frankenstein rivaled to Rime of the Ancient Mariner English novelist Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and English poet Samuel Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner share very closely tied themes respectively in their own literary worlds. Through both novel and poem, in the eyes of each Victor Frankenstein and the Mariner three themes recur within. Knowledge, Frankenstein is addicted to knowledge in younger pursuits. The Mariner is cursed on the spread of knowledge of his obliterate tale of desolation through the wedding guest. Desolation, Frankenstein constantly torn by guilt wears himself to illness and disconnection from surrounding life. When the dead men come back to the physical world to curse the Ancient Mariner with their eyes. Men (like Adam) feel the urge to define things, and the Ancient Mariner seems to feel this urge when he suddenly and inexplicably destroys the Albatross, shooting it from the sky as if he needs to bring it into the physical realm, to explain to himself. It is mortal, but closely tied to the metaphysical, spiritual world, it even flies like a spirit because it is a bird. This use of nature to teach in Rime of the Ancient Mariner is alternatively seen in Frankenstein to heal. The use of a mountain river to describe Frankensteins feelings is the beginning of a theme that is continued throughout the story. The Difference Between Schooling and Education free essay sample

Taylor Gatto’s article he explains the difference between â€Å"schooling† and â€Å"education†. And if children really need to be in school to get and have an education. Or can the children simply teach themselves by there own experiences and or mistakes. This also goes for the teachers that teach these kids to have an education. Gatto states â€Å"I had enough time to reason to think of our schools-with their long-term, cell-block-style, forced confinement of both students and teachers- as virtual factories of childishness. (34) This goes on to say that is sitting in classrooms all day and all week really teaching our children any kind of education at all? I would have to say that any child is either going to learn anything is to actually do the task physically and or learn in a way where its not somewhere where they will be forced to learn the material let alone feeling imprisoned. The real question is â€Å"What exactly is the purpose of our public schools? † (34) The answer that Gatto came up with was three reasons: to make good people, to make good citizens, to make each person his/ her personal best. (35) These reasons have nothing to do with what our public schools. We are who we are, we don’t need to have schools tell us who and what we need to be and we need to live among one another. As far as education goes that’s something you can learn with time and experience. I think this article really opened up my outlook on â€Å"schooling† and â€Å"education† and what the difference really are between the two. I think that this article that Gatto published was something that needed to be seen and overlooked by many parents and the Americans of the U. S to see if schooling is really something that we need, and or is it education that gets you somewhere in life?
